No Above-Ground Pivot Irrigation

Above Ground pivot irrigation is wasteful and wastes our precious resource - WATER.

Having complete control of the production cycle, “From Seed to Store”, allows Farmer Bob to achieve his mission - To produce agricultural products that are of the highest quality which are pleasing to customers all while going above and beyond to farm responsibly.

Planned Subsurface Drip Irrigation (SDI)

Irrigation is important to a crop. Above ground irrigation is inefficient and wastes water. Subsurface Drip Irrigation is 95% efficient and not susceptible to evaporation or runoff. Therefore, an SDI system can deliver water with an efficiency of 95% or higher. This means that for every inch of water that is pumped from the pond, 0.95 inch or more stays in the crop root zone, where it is needed. Currently, PPC is not irrigated but has plans to make the investment.

The drip tape is installed 12”-16” below the ground so the corn plant’s roots are no farther than 5” from water.

Earth-Friendly Farming Practices

Waste nothing!

Grain Cleaning Process

Farmer Bob uses a sophisticated process to clean the crops from foreign matter from the field (dust, sticks, stones), any broken, under or over sized, or any over or under weight kernels. Lastly, an optical sorter chooses only the correct color kernels. There is a 20% discard rate, leaving only the best of the best.

Sophisticated, High-Tech Grain Bin technology

Conditioning is very important in popcorn. An exact moisture percentage is vital to popability. Farmer Bob uses a high tech computer managed bin management system which incorporates temperature and moisture reading cables run vertically through the crop. These readings, combined with the integrated weather station, are used to run the drying fans at precise times to greatly reduce the use of electricity while perfecting the condition.

Fuel and Energy Effeciency

After harvest, Farmer Bob handles the crop as little as possible to reduce fuel consumption and maintain quality.

Popcorn Pork

The high discard rate is due to the pursuit of the very best product. Don’t worry, the culls are used to feed Farmer Bob’s pigs. They are a heritage breed named, Large Black Hogs.

Crop Rotation & Cover Crops

Farmer Bob rotates a different crop in each field every year. This helps to reduce pest pressure as well as maintain the health and quality of the field.
In between each crop, a cover crop is planted, often by airplane. This helps to reduce soil loss due to wind and water erosion as well as conserve moisture. It is also increases biomass, improving the soil.
