Farmer Bob's Organic Whole Oat Groats are the complete oat kernel with only the inedible hull removed - nothing cut, nothing rolled, nothing steamed. USDA Certified Organic, non-GMO, US grown without glyphosate, farmer direct, in reclosable 1 lb, 2 lb and 5 lb bags.

Groats or steel cut? Read this first

We sell both, and they are the same oat at two stages of processing. The groat is the intact kernel. Steel cut oats are that same groat run through a steel blade and chopped into two or three pieces. Cutting is irreversible, so the choice comes down to one question: do you want to do the processing yourself?

  • Buy groats if you own a flaker or roller and want to make your own rolled oats, if you want to cook oats whole like rice or barley, if you sprout, if you plant, or if you are storing food long term.
  • Buy steel cut if you want breakfast porridge on a weekday morning and are never going to roll your own.

The intact kernel also stores better. Every cut surface is an exposure point for the oat's oil, so whole groats keep their sweetness considerably longer than cut or rolled oats - the same reason home millers buy wheat berries instead of flour.

What people do with whole groats

  • Rolling your own oats - flake fresh for oatmeal that actually tastes of oats.
  • Whole-cooked groats - chewy, nutty, good in grain bowls, pilafs and soups.
  • Sprouting - raw and untreated, so they will germinate.
  • Planting - clean seed with no chemical treatment, for cover crop and forage plots.
  • Long-term storage - a pantry staple that keeps for years sealed and dry.

Cooking and storage

Simmer 1 cup of groats in 3 cups of water for 45 to 60 minutes until chewy-tender; an overnight soak cuts that roughly in half. Store the sealed bag cool, dry and out of the light, and reclose tightly after opening.

One farmer, one field. Grown, bagged and shipped by Farmer Bob in Princeton, Kansas.
