A two pound bag of yellow mushroom popcorn kernels - the ball-shaped coating corn, in our lower-cost flexible bag rather than a rigid tub. Roughly sixteen stovetop batches from a quarter-cup scoop.

Ball-shaped, and why that matters

Mushroom corn pops into a dense, round, close to spherical piece. Butterfly corn pops into an irregular winged shape. Those wings are fragile, and the moment you tumble winged popcorn in hot caramel or kettle sugar they snap off and settle as sweet crumb in the bottom of the bag. A mushroom ball has nothing to snap. That is the entire reason the commercial caramel corn trade runs on mushroom corn, and the reason your homemade batches will look and hold like the ones you buy.

  • Caramel corn - even coating, no shattering.
  • Kettle corn - holds the sugar shell through the toss.
  • Chocolate drizzle, cheese corn, candy coatings.
  • Gift tins and party bowls - stays whole through handling.

For plain buttered popcorn, most people still prefer butterfly. It is more tender and its wings hold seasoning better. Mushroom is the coating corn, not the everyday eating corn.

Bag or tub

This is the same kernel we pack in 2 lb tubs, minus the rigid reclosable container. Buy the bag if you are working through it within a few weeks or will decant it. Buy the tub if it sits on a shelf for months.

Popping it

Give it room - a crowded pan stops the kernels expanding into full spheres. Two to three tablespoons of oil or tallow, heated until shimmering, a quarter cup of kernels, lid on, off the heat when popping slows.

We received our first order of your mushroom popcorn. I must tell you that I'm quite disappointed. First, I would estimate that no more than half of the kernels pop to a size and appearance you show in all of your ads. In addition, there were a large number of kernels that did not pop completely, with a very hard lump inside and I also thought there were excessive hulls. So in my quest to find corn that actually appears like the advertisements Princeton Popcorn has certainly failed.

Regards,

Pete Lovell

Finally, I have mushroom popcorn that actually pops into those balls of heaven that you could only get at the local fair! First batch came out of the microwave in good shape. I will soon cook some up as "kettle corn" that I've been craving...

Great package outstandingly delivered exactly

Great package outstandingly delivered exactly as advertised but it’s just not for me. Sturdy enuff for mixing caramel or what ever but to heavy for me. Excellent to TRY for me though

Best popcorn

Mushroom popcorn is light and fluffy. It is not tough to chew. The flavor is delicious. It does not compare to any previous popcorn I have eaten. It is my favorite.

Better as kettle corn.

No flavor. Large hulls that cannot be avoided. Best used for kettle corn I think.

Delicious product, especially if you follow the directions!

Pay attention to the directions because they make all the difference. The directions suggest a large pan or pot and some hot oil, but mention you can do it with an air popper. I have found that the air popper constricts the overall size of the kernel when it pops because it is crowded. A proper pan with a large lid, perhaps even something as large as a stock pot or a wok, makes the kernels pop to their full delicious size. I am absolutely thrilled with this product and the customer service is personal and direct and very fast. Something rare these days. This is delicious product and you will not be disappointed.

Too many hulls

The mushroom popcorn tasted really good and was definitely a large round ball but the were too many hulls. I had to remove them from each piece before I could eat them. There were more than one hull per ball! Do you make one that doesn’t have that?
